Orkand Corporation Taps Former IBM and SkyTel Exec to
Lead New Business Development; Company Ramps Up for Expansions Into e-Gov
Market
FALLS CHURCH, Va., July 25, 2000--The Orkand Corporation, as part of
its plan to aggressively expand its reach in the solutions services market, has appointed former IBM and
SkyTel executive, Calvin LaRoche, as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development.
With the addition of LaRoche to the executive team the company is positioned to improve upon 1999
revenues of $80 million with a slate of new e-technology offerings aimed at e-Gov, GIS and Information
Management applications.
"We're very excited about the immediate and long term benefits this appointment brings, particularly in
the area of electronic government," noted Orkand Corp. founder and president, Dr. Donald Orkand. "The
addition to our team of a proven technology performer like Cal LaRoche signals the dawn of a new era
that will see this company become increasingly active in new e-business areas as well as offer new
technologies and services to our existing client base," he stated.
Under the e-Gov mandate, the federal government is taking steps to provide information and financial
transactions -- such as requesting records or filing for licenses -- online.
Prior to joining Orkand, LaRoche served as a Chief Executive Officer and President of international
operations with wireless communications provider SkyTel Communications Inc., a recently acquired
division of MCI WorldCom. Among his responsibilities there, LaRoche was senior executive in charge of
SkyTel's wholesale subsidiary, Destineer, whose revenues grew to $110 million under his direction. During
his 25-year tenure with IBM, LaRoche led a 1200-member information systems sales and marketing force
and oversaw the corporation's global advertising and promotional efforts. He was ultimately named Senior
Partner of the IBM Consulting Group, a global IT and business process reengineering consultancy, and
rounded out his career with IBM as Senior Director of Strategic Development.
"The face of technology is changing and now, with the evolution of the e-Gov initiative, the promise of a
paperless society is beginning to emerge within the federal government," explains LaRoche. "The Orkand
Corporation is uniquely equipped to immediately provide the technologies and services necessary to
transform the way government does business and ensure the success of the e-Gov initiative," he added.
The Orkand Corporation has provided IT solutions and services to clients in the federal government
since 1970. The company is the second largest IT service provider to the Department of State and the
third largest to the Department of Labor. Headquartered in Falls Church, VA, The Orkand Corporation
employs a staff of over 1000 and was recently recognized by Washington Technology magazine as one of
the top 100 federal IT corporations in America.
