Chesapeake Corporation's UK Specialty Packaging Business Offering New 3-D Printing Technology
RICHMOND, Va., Jul 25, 2000 - Field Group plc, a subsidiary of Chesapeake Corporation based in
Amersham, United Kingdom, will be completing its first order for 3-D lenticular imaging applied on product packaging in
mid-August. The order came from Cereal Partners, a Nestle/General Mills subsidiary. Field Group is one of three companies in the
world at the forefront of lenticular imaging, which lends a three-dimensional look to two-dimensional images to create a visual
impression of movement and depth.
Field Group's Thatcham, United Kingdom, facility developed the lenticular printing technology. Gary Howe, product development
manager, said, " Many leading brands in market sectors ranging from drinks to toys to cosmetics have expressed interest in this
new printing capability. What is attracting so much interest is that 3-D images on a package can market products in a new,
innovative way."
Since lenticular printing can lend 3-dimensional animation to corporate logos, symbols and other marks, Howe predicts Field
Group's new printing capability may be used to ensure product security, which is particularly important for global brands. "Because
lenticular imaging cannot be copied by scanning, its application to various products and product packaging can significantly help
prevent the sale of counterfeit goods. Counterfeiting products results in the loss of approximately $3 billion annually. If we can
protect a brand from counterfeiting, and thus save a percentage of this loss to the brand, the cost of lenticular printing becomes
self-financing."
Field Group, one of Europe's leading packaging manufacturers, is part of Chesapeake Corporation's European Specialty
Packaging business. Field supplies cartons, leaflets and labels from 34 manufacturing facilities in Europe.
