ORBCOMM User Savings Roar into Regulated Marine Satellite Positioning
Valpariaso, Chile July 25 - Marine Imaging Systems (Marimsys S.A.) announced today that the
ORBCOMM satellite system will carry over 70% of the traffic in the Chilean Vessel Monitoring
System (VMS). These systems monitor the position of fishing vessels in order to nurture fishing
stocks; Chile’s worldwide fleet has the second largest blue water catch in the world.
The sovereign and treaty regulated marine market represents a breakthrough for the rapidly
rolling-out Orbcomm system, and begins an era of lowered costs for fishing vessel operators who
have been almost completely restricted to Inmarsat ‘C based products. The 30,000 plus
ORBCOMM systems placed in service in the last year or so are primarily in new markets, created
by the new capabilities of the ORBCOMM system. This phenomenal growth rate brings
ORBCOMM to approximate equality with Inmarsat in the total number of installed satellite
communicators; yet this high-margin regulated section of the marine market has been dominated
by Inmarsat.
Fishing vessel owners chose ORBCOMM in Chile because of the capacity to develop future
applications on the equipment and the reduced cost of system hardware and monthly bandwidth
charges. Per Pat Waggaman, Managing Director of Marine Imaging Systems, “With this strong
entry into the Chilean VMS, we begin to bring to regulated marine users the strong ORBCOMM
package of low-cost technological benefits.”
The Chilean VMS was a combined effort of Orbcomm and several of its South American partners.
Marimsys provided system level administrative software and charting, capable of managing
vessel positioning along the 40 degrees of latitude of the Chilean EEZ, for 1,000 vessels at 1
minute intervals. The Marimsys 6 Byte Report © was a significant element in reducing
bandwidth usage and lowering user costs, as was the Marimsys Modem - VMS. DAMOS
SudAmerica at the Southern Cone level, and ENTEL at the national level, provided significant
hardware expertise and support.
Founded in 1995 in Vina del Mar, Chile, Marine Imaging Systems is a worldwide leader in
bathymetry, and nautical charting software. Today these products map seamounts thousands of
miles from shore, provide fishermen with an unexcelled ability to precision trawl the deep, and
precisely position vessels on Marimsys charting systems. Marimsys communications products
aid in enterprise resource planning functions by synchronizing remote “off the backbone” users
with head office personnel.
