ACS Helps Client Win First Place Technology Award at International Technology Conference
DALLAS, Jul 26, 2000 - ACS (NYSE: ACS), a leading provider of technology-based
outsourcing solutions to government and commercial clients worldwide, announced today that its client, the City of
Riverside, California was awarded First Place for "Best Internet Mapping" for its Internet mapping applications by
Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI).
Ten thousand Geographic Information Systems professionals from all over the world met in San Diego, California for
the Twentieth Annual ESRI International User Conference. ESRI is the worldwide, recognized leader in providing
Geographic Information System (GIS) software and services. ESRI hosted the first "Internet and Multimedia
Exhibition." This event was an opportunity for designers and developers of Internet mapping applications to
demonstrate their achievements in the area of interactive mapping utilities.
In 1997, ACS and the City of Riverside entered into an agreement to outsource all of the city's information technology
and implement a strategy to improve services to the citizens. The technological advancements that Riverside, in
partnership with ACS, has achieved moved the city forward in its goal to become a Smart Community.
ACS developed the GIS applications, and then submitted the applications to the "Internet and Multimedia Exhibition."
The GIS applications were made available to all conference exhibition attendees, and were judged by ESRI staff based
on ergonomics and functionality.
Ronald O. Loveridge, Mayor of the City of Riverside, has been a key supporter of the use of GIS at the City. Mayor
Loveridge commented: "This award is an excellent example of making technology work. It is critical that we use
technology such as the Internet and GIS to make information more available and accessible to the public. The city of
Riverside is committed to improving communications and cooperative interaction. Our Smart Community initiatives and
technology plan, developed with ACS, are designed to make these goals happen."
Brad Mayo, GIS Project Manager for the City of Riverside added, "It is rewarding to have our work with ACS
recognized by our peers. But it is not about awards, it's about building useful GIS applications that offer real value to
our users."
Perhaps the most important recognition is the success of the GIS applications. Each month Riverside's Internet GIS
applications host about 1,500 visitors performing nearly 10,000 operations. According to Alan Smith, Riverside's
Enterprisewide GIS Analyst who is responsible for the Internet applications, "The relatively heavy use that the
applications see is the best indication of a technology that delivers something of true value to its users. Certainly the
recognition from ESRI is very satisfying, no one knows the industry's technologies better than ESRI."
"This partnership continues to be a significant example of how the public and private sectors can come together to
create useful tools and find better ways to enhance service delivery to its citizens," said Harvey V. Brasell, President of
ACS' State and Local Government Division. "We expect that many other innovative ideas will come from this
relationship which can be utilized in other cities across the country".
The City of Riverside has been using GIS for nearly ten years and advocates practical use of GIS technology. The GIS
team is always looking for ways to leverage the city's wealth of GIS data and resources. The GIS web site can be
visited at: http://www.ci.riverside.ca.us/gis. It can also be accessed through the City's web page.
